Give a little time. Grow something together.

There’s a place for you in this.

Volunteer Kahnawà:ke connects people who want to help with the organizations and neighbours who need it. Tell us what you care about and when you’re free, and a real person will help you find something that fits your life. No experience needed.

Why volunteer?

In Kahnawà:ke, helping each other has never been a transaction. It’s how families show up for one another, how events come together, and how elders and youth stay close to the community.

A real person, not a listing.

Volunteering here is relationship-based. Someone who knows the community connects you with people who could use a hand.

On your terms.

Give as much or as little as fits your life. You tell us what you’d enjoy, when you’re free, and what you’d rather not be asked to do.

Good for you, too.

In our 2024 community survey, 72% of volunteers said their mental health improved after volunteering.

Ka'nikonhrí:io - helping with a good mind, expecting nothing in return.

Start with what you care about.

The form begins by asking which causes are closest to your heart. Organizations choose from the same list, so it’s easy to see where you fit.

  • Children & Youth
  • Elders & Seniors
  • Language & Culture
  • Health & Wellness
  • Food Security & Basic Needs
  • Education & Literacy
  • Environment & Land
  • Sports & Recreation
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Community Events & Gatherings
  • Public Safety & Emergency Response
  • Spiritual & Faith Communities

From there, you’ll choose the kinds of help you’d enjoy from a list of 50, and tell us anything you’d rather not be asked to do.

Everyone’s welcome. Give in the way that fits.

Youth and adults, elders, newcomers and lifelong residents, people with a skill to share and people who just want to help. When you register, you choose how you’d like to give.

One-time events

Help out at a single event and head home knowing you made a difference.

Occasional (when I can)

Say yes when the timing works, and pass when it doesn’t.

Regular ongoing role

Something steady to look forward to, with an organization you care about.

Seasonal

Help during a particular time of year, when an organization needs it most.

You can choose more than one. And there’s no minimum - in our 2024 survey, 39% of volunteers gave one to five hours a month. Even one hour counts.

How it works.

Five steps, and a real person with you the whole way.

  1. 1

    Register

Fill out the online form: what you care about, what you’d enjoy, when you’re free, and anything you’d rather not do.

  2. 2

    Meet the coordinator

Once the program opens, the VK coordinator reaches out to say hello, get to know you, and answer your questions.

  3. 3

    Get ready

A short orientation and a few simple agreements, like a code of conduct. Some roles, such as working with children or elders, may also ask for a background check. You’ll always know before you say yes.

  4. 4

    Get matched

When an opportunity fits you, the coordinator contacts you personally. You’re always free to say no.

  5. 5

    Stay in touch

We check in along the way, keep track of your hours, and ask how it went, so every match keeps getting better.

What to expect.

What you can count on

  • You choose the causes, activities, and times that suit you.
  • You can say no to anything you’re not comfortable with.
  • A named person to greet you and show you what to do.
  • Check-ins, and a chance to tell us how it went.

What we’ll ask of you

  • Honest answers on the form, so the match fits.
  • Show up when you’ve said you will, or let us know if plans change.
  • Treat the people you’re helping, and each other, with respect.
  • Complete the agreements, and a background check if your role calls for one.

Under 18? The form asks for a parent or guardian’s name, phone number, and consent.

Questions people ask.

No. Registering puts you on the list. You decide whether to say yes to each opportunity.

Volunteer Kahnawà:ke is getting ready to launch. As the program opens up, someone from VK will reach out personally. If anything changes in the meantime, email info@volunteerkahnawake.ca.

No. Bring whatever you have - an afternoon, a skill, a kind ear. If a role needs training or a particular skill, we’ll tell you up front.

No. The form asks which languages you speak, and a few opportunities may call for a particular one, but you don’t need Kanien'kéha to register.

The form asks what would make it easier for you to take part - like someone to go with the first time, help with transportation, or training first. We can’t promise every support, but knowing helps us find something that works for you.

Yes - youth are a big part of Volunteer Kahnawà:ke. If you’re under 18, the form asks for a parent or guardian’s contact information and consent. Some opportunities have a minimum age, and we’ll only suggest ones that fit.
